Melbourne
Travel Guide - The State of Victoria,
covering 227,600 square kilometres, hides at southeast
tip of the Australia continent. Residing beside the
Yarra River, Melbourne is the capital of Australia’s
second smallest state. Melbourne does not have the
blessed climate of Brisbane and neither the glamourous
city life of Sydney and small in size to its neighbouring
states. This does not mean it is inferior to them.
With its cosmopolitan make up, Melbourne
is widely known as one of the world's the
most liveable cities. With a quarter of its population
born overseas and the continuous flow of immigration
from Asia and Europe, it often claims itself as the
third largest Greek city in the world and the largest
Italian city outside Italy. Melbourne certainly lives
up to this with its cosmopolitan atmosphere. .
Birthplace
of Australian Rules Football and home to the nation's
richest horse race, Tooheys Blue Melbourne
Cup, Melbourne has established itself as
an ideal venue for sporting events. Its track record
includes events like Formula 1 Grand Prix, Australian
Open tennis championship, Motorcycle Grand Prix etc.
And also it must not be forgotten that it was the
first Australia city to hold the gigantic event, Olympics
Games, in 1956, decades before Sydney had the honor.
The spire at Victoria Arts Centre is Melbourne's
most familiar landmark. In addition to that, it has
the Twelve Apostles, located along the scenery Great
Ocean Road, as its icon and the famous Philip Island's
penguins to do the welcome parade to attract tourist
all over the world to visit Melbourne.
Melbourne Australia has indeed shown
that size does not matter and it need not play second
fiddle when it comes to attracting visitors.
